When Is It Time to Leave? What Families of Trans Youth Are Facing

Hello Reader

Since January 20, scarcely a day has passed without a parent of a transgender child asking me whether it's time to leave the country. My response has stayed mostly the same: everyone’s risk tolerance is different. Everyone’s financial capacity to make that kind of move is different. And I don’t believe we’re in a full state of emergency just yet.

The inevitable follow-up question is: How will we know when we are?

The truth is, I don’t know.

In this new blog post, I reflect on the rising fears, the real legislative threats in places like Arizona, Texas, and Montana—and the gut-wrenching decisions families are having to make. But I also share why not everything is doomed, why not everyone has to leave, and what we can do together to protect our kids and each other.

Whether you're staying, leaving, or still deciding—you’re not alone.

Support for Caregivers of Trans and Gender-Expansive Kids

If you're parenting a trans or gender-expansive child right now, you may be navigating more than anyone can see.

Between shifting laws, complicated conversations, and everyday worries about safety and belonging, it’s a lot. And while you’re focused on supporting your child—you also deserve support. That’s why I offer parent coaching: a private space for you to ask questions, process feelings, and get grounded guidance from someone who’s walked alongside hundreds of families.

You’re already doing so much. You don’t have to do it alone.

Sign up for a complimentary virtual consult to see if parent coaching could be supportive for you.

Finding LGBTQ+ Affirming Mental Health Support

🏳️‍🌈 Looking for a therapist for your LGBTQ+ child and not sure where to start?

I recently had the honor of being interviewed for this U.S. News & World Report article on how to find a mental health professional who’s truly affirming and well-equipped to support LGBTQ+ youth.

The piece breaks down how to begin the search, what questions to ask, how to identify red flags, and why lived experience and cultural humility matter when working with LGBTQ+ clients—especially kids and teens.

Hello Reader One of the most meaningful parts of this work is hearing directly from parents themselves—their honesty, their fears, and their deep love for their kids. That’s why I created the Parent Voices series—a space for parents of trans youth to share their experiences anonymously, in their own words. It offers a way to tell their stories openly and honestly, without fear for their safety or the risk of outing their child, and so other parents and caregivers can learn from one another...

Hello Reader Each time policies shift or lifelines for queer and trans people are limited, families are left to do what they’ve always done—find ways to protect, affirm, and love their kids through uncertainty. If you’re a parent, educator, or ally, you already know that trans youth deserve so much more than fear and to be used as political pawns. They deserve care, safety, and hope that doesn’t waver when the headlines do. In this week’s blog, I’ve gathered 25+ trusted, affirming...

Hello Reader The internet has borne witness to myriad trends, but few as intriguing to me as the recent viral question posed to men: "How often do you think about Ancient Rome?" While it's easy to dismiss this as a simple internet oddity or even an emblem of male power fantasies and misogyny, closer examination reveals a complex tapestry of modern anxieties, gender socialization, racial dynamics, and the loneliness inherent in modern masculinity. In this light, the question about Ancient Rome...
