440 Bills 👀

Hi Reader,

There are 440 active bills attacking trans people, and the majority of of this legislation targets young people. You may have seen people referring to the current anti-trans legislation as a genocidal attack and it meets legal criteria as such “by subjecting transgender children to ‘conditions of life that are intended to cause the physical destruction of the group in whole or in part’” (LFGG Trans Health Report). As of this week, seven states have banned gender affirming care for youth - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Utah.

The Impact of Anti-Trans Legislation on Trans Youth

The implications of this wave of anti-trans legislation are wide-reaching and frightening. Some bills intend to forcibly detransition trans youth in the state, providing provisions that instruct doctors how to medically detransition youth under their care. Others threaten parents with losing custody of their children. Medical and mental health care providers will face felony charges for providing what we know is life saving care. Crisis hotlines are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of calls, and the volunteers can’t keep up. I am not being dramatic. This is where we are. Click here to read the blog.

Hello Reader One of the most meaningful parts of this work is hearing directly from parents themselves—their honesty, their fears, and their deep love for their kids. That’s why I created the Parent Voices series—a space for parents of trans youth to share their experiences anonymously, in their own words. It offers a way to tell their stories openly and honestly, without fear for their safety or the risk of outing their child, and so other parents and caregivers can learn from one another...

Hello Reader Each time policies shift or lifelines for queer and trans people are limited, families are left to do what they’ve always done—find ways to protect, affirm, and love their kids through uncertainty. If you’re a parent, educator, or ally, you already know that trans youth deserve so much more than fear and to be used as political pawns. They deserve care, safety, and hope that doesn’t waver when the headlines do. In this week’s blog, I’ve gathered 25+ trusted, affirming...

Hello Reader Since January 20, scarcely a day has passed without a parent of a transgender child asking me whether it's time to leave the country. My response has stayed mostly the same: everyone’s risk tolerance is different. Everyone’s financial capacity to make that kind of move is different. And I don’t believe we’re in a full state of emergency just yet. The inevitable follow-up question is: How will we know when we are? The truth is, I don’t know. In this new blog post, I reflect on the...
